About Eagle Rock
Think of a low-key place to live with an extra special vibe all its own – that’s Eagle Rock. Undoubtedly one of L.A.’s most unique and bohemian neighborhoods.
Community:
Eagle Rock… downtown Los Angeles and LAX.
Eagle Rock is a neighborhood in the northeast part of Los Angeles, and was incorporated as a city in 1911. It combined with the City of Los Angeles in 1923. It abuts the San Rafael Mountains and is named after a large rock which has a shadow which resembles an eagle with its wings outstretched.
Eagle Rock is bordered by the city of Glendale to its north and west, Highland Park to the southeast, Glassell Park to the southwest and the cities of Pasadena and South Pasadena to the east. The multi-lane Glendale and Ventura freeways run along its fringes. Eagle Rock is 10 miles and 25 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles and LAX, respectively.
Neighborhood:
Eagle Rock is filled with interesting neighborhoods and streets. Hill Drive is one of Eagle Rock's most beautiful streets and is, like many of the streets that comprise Eagle Rock, filled with architecturally innovative and imposing homes in the Craftsman, Georgian, Art Deco and Mission Revival styles.
Cool and (quietly) happening best describe Eagle Rock, like York Boulevard, which runs between Eagle Rock and Highland Park and was declared to be “L.A.'s Coolest Street” by Conde Nast Traveler in 2013. Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards offer unique specialty clothing stores, antique crafts shops and other shopping delights.
The Sights:
The Eagle Rock Recreation Center has a lot to offer any person wanting to keep fit. It has a basketball court, two football fields, three baseball diamonds, a gym, two picnic areas and barbecues, and a children’s play area. Eagle Rock Center for the Arts can also be an interesting place to visit. The Center hosts the annual Eagle Rock Music Festival, which is a street fest that promotes local musicians.
Nature is all around you in Eagle Rock. It is surrounded by interesting brush-like scenery and of course ‘the Rock’ after it was named. You may want to do a good hike around the eponymous rock – the scenery can be quite beautiful.
Lifestyle:
For a delectable Mexican feast, CaCao Mexicatessan is a great choice, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. Locals love it and know it well. You can snack on chilaquiles smothered in rich mole poblano or cheesy stacked enchiladas made with homemade corn tortillas.
A place with a quintessential neighborhood feel is the Eagle Rock Italian Bakery & Deli, which has been a beloved community flagship for over 40 years – call it a ‘rock for the Rock’! It has a terrific deli counter and full-service bakery, as well as fresh pasta, Italian sweets, and olive oils readily available for purchase. Mamma would have been proud.
Other good places to eat and enjoy Eagle Rock’s vibe include:
- Café Beaujolais – offering traditional French cuisine at moderate prices
- Casa Bianca Pizza Pie – think thin crispy crusts and classic Italian tastes
- Chateau Lemongrass – classic Vietnamese cuisine in a laidback setting
